Born in 1984, Philip was introduced to the piano at the age of 7, played in bands throughout his teenage years, and only at university turned to classical composition with any seriousness. He graduated from Durham University with a 1st class hons BA in Music and Composition and a distinction MA in Composition with Arts and Humanities and Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust scholarships. After this, he studied for a Postgraduate Diploma at the Royal College of Music under Michael zev Gordon.

He’s written for a wide range of media and situations – from large-scale concert commissions, chamber music, to television, theatre, musicals, opera, dance, rock and choral music.

Clients have included…

Music for Warner (Big Bang Theory) and Creative Storm networks, music and video for BBC Radio 3 Radio 2, 6Music,  ballet (LAMDA), opera (Durham Opera Ensemble), choral music (Aoide, Bishop’s Consort, New London Singers, Durham University Chamber Choir) film, radio (BBC Radio 3, Hayes FM, OnFM, Roundhouse Radio).

Commissions performed by Lore Lixenberg, the Northern Sinfonia, Hastings Philhamonic, Durham University Chamber Orchestra, cellist Oliver Coates and the Ossian Ensemble, the Royal Academy of Music Composers’ Ensemble, Orfea Ensemble and several choirs including the Bishop’s Consort, New London Singers, Durham University Chamber Choir and Aoide in venues including Wigmore Hall, the Sage Gateshead, St. Martin in the Fields,  Durham, Ely and Southwark Cathedrals and York Minster.

I’ve regularly shot, directed, produced and edited video for the BBC (BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3, 6Music), using everything from iphones, to Canon XF-305s, Nikon 5Ds in multishot recordings, editing using Adobe Premiere Pro CC. Click on Video Production to take a look!
